Motorcycle accidents can cause painful road rash

On Behalf of | Nov 24, 2021 | Motorcycle Accidents

With a few weeks of the fall season remaining, motorcycle riders may be taking advantage of the beautiful scenery Seattle has to offer. There are several conditions that can cause motorcycle riders to be injured in an accident, however. They may include the weather, another driver operating his or her vehicle inattentively or following a rider too closely.

If a motorcycle rider is in an accident, he or she may suffer from a very painful condition called road rash. Road rash is a skin abrasion that occurs when the rider’s skin is scraped by a hard surface, like pavement. A rider’s knees, elbows, forearms and hands are most susceptible to road rash.

While a rider’s protective clothing, including a helmet and shoes, can help to protect his or her body he or she may still suffer from road rash on exposed skin.

Road rash injuries and treatment

The rider may experience surface burns, however he or she can also have more serious injuries that cause scarring called traumatic tattoos. Traumatic tattoos happen when dirt, glass, metal or other foreign objects are lodged in the person’s skin. These may require skin grafts, wound debridement or other surgical treatments to correct.

If the injury is minor, it may be treated by antibiotics and regular bandage changes. A physician may also treat the injury with pain relievers, either over-the-counter or by prescription.

Depending on the extent of the injury, the motorcycle rider can be faced with expensive medical bills and financial loss if he or she is unable to work in order to heal. If a motorcycle rider has been in an accident, there is help available.
