As the weather improves in Seattle, there will be more people taking to the road as bicyclists, joggers and pedestrians. This happens every spring and summer and drivers are advised to keep watch to avoid auto accidents with injuries and fatalities. Unfortunately, many drivers operate their vehicles in dangers ways whether that is due to personal recklessness, distraction, driving under the influence or drowsiness. This inevitably places others in jeopardy. To make matters worse, some choose to flee after a crash. Following a hit and run accident, it is important for victims and their families to know their options.

Man, 63, killed in hit and run bicycle accident

A 63-year-old man who was passionate about fitness died when he was hit by a car as he rode his bicycle. According to the investigation, the driver who hit him was going the wrong way on the road. The driver fled the scene in the vehicle and law enforcement has received what it believes to be partial license plate information. The man was taken to the hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. The vehicle is suspected to be an older Nissan Sentra. The victim was a local airport employee with more than 20 years of experience. He was an experienced bicycle rider and runner. He was married with a daughter, a stepdaughter and step-granddaughter. Police are seeking assistance in finding the driver.

Understanding the dangers bicyclists face on the road

While many drivers are vigilant about keeping a close eye on the road, checking their mirrors and behaving predictably, others are not. This is especially treacherous for bicyclists who can be catastrophically injured and lose their lives if they are hit by a car. If the rider is fortunate enough to survive, there is a good chance that there will be broken bones, cuts, spinal cord injuries, brain trauma or other issues that will lead to major medical costs and a radically altered life. When there is a fatality, the family will need to consider how they will adapt after this unexpected and unnecessary incident.

A full investigation and professional help may be key

People who have been injured or lost a loved one in fatal motor vehicle accidents may not know where to turn in the immediate aftermath. This is especially true if it is taking time for law enforcement to locate the driver. In this accident, a man who was simply out riding his bicycle was struck and killed by a driver who was driving in the wrong direction and fled rather than try and help. It may be wise for the family to seek professional assistance immediately to determine the preferable course of action.
